Save Time, Save Money & Get Fit at Home

Let’s face it, a gym membership isn’t cheap and on top of it, your time is priceless!  I know some people love going to the gym.  They enjoy the social interaction, the ‘gym feel’ and structured classes.  I, on the other hand, prefer to get fit at home and work with others who feel the same way.

I used to have a gym membership.  In fact, I’ve had several memberships over the years.  Each time I felt like I wanted to get fit, I would find a gym, make a visit, sign-up, go for a couple of months and then slowly, over time, I would quit going.  The membership fee would still come out of my bank account every month whether I went or not, so I’d cancel my membership after my initial term was up.  Then time would pass and I would convince myself there were reasons I didn’t go to ‘that’ gym.  Some of those reason were that the class times weren’t convenient for me, or I didn’t feel comfortable there, or I didn’t have time, etc. and then I’d go through the whole thing again at another gym – only to quit once again.  Who knows how much money I have spent on memberships I’ve never used!

Then one day, I discovered that with minimal investment I could get fit at home when it was convenient for me.  I started with a weight bench and some free weights and a few home fitness DVDs.  I found there were days in which I could get my workout in before work and then there were days where a late night workout was all I could do.  No matter what time I chose to workout, all I had to do was put on my workout clothes and pop in a DVD or jump on the machine in the corner of the spare bedroom.  I didn’t have to go anywhere, which saves me a significant amount of time and I didn’t have to worry about packing my gym bag – you know how many times I got to the gym without a critical article of clothing, like workout shorts or shoes?  It’s a pain to try and remember everything for work and then the kids lunches, permission slips, homework – and then pack a gym bag on top of it.  No thanks!  I also like being able to jump right in the shower and have a cup of coffee while I get ready for the day.  Some of the Beachbody moms I work with tell me they like to workout during their kids’ nap-time or before they wake-up in the morning and no more reserving time and dragging the kids to the gym child care center.  You know what’s cool too?  Older kids get inspired by your dedication to fitness and they will join you.  I hear stories about little ones doing kiddie modified fitness programs with their parents.  Some of the Beachbody programs are even designed just for kids like Shaun Ts Fit Kids® Club.  What a great way to be a role model for your children!

Another bonus to getting fit at home is that I don’t have to worry about what I look like while I’m working out.  I can make funny faces, sweat, grunt, smile, laugh or whatever and not worry about other people seeing me.  I get better results in less time at home too.  There is no downtime at home as I don’t have to wait for anyone to get done with a piece of equipment I want to use or wait for an instructor to show up.  I guess you could call me a control fanatic, but getting fit at home just works for me.

  • I save time – I don’t have to drive anywhere, I don’t have to pack a gym bag, I can jump right in the shower and get ready at home, no packing the kids up, no child care required
  • I don’t care what I look like – I workout harder and get better results
  • I save money – I don’t use gas driving to the gym, I purchase fitness DVDs and minimal equipment to create custom workout programs that work for me, my old gym shorts work well and I don’t have to have the cute new styles – unless I treat myself, and I do!
  • I make money getting fit – Because I have achieved results and because I love the Beachbody products, it has been easy for me to make money by being a independent Beachbody Coach.  I get to help people achieve their health and fitness goals and that is fun for me!

Day 10 – P90X Shoulders & Arms, Ab Ripper X

TBBlogo_finalP90X workouts are always a push to exhaustion – and the shoulders and arms workout is no different than the rest.  Since you are using smaller muscle groups in this workout, I don’t walk away from this workout completely drained all over.  My arms are definitely weak and shake – or kind-of quiver after the workout, but I do push myself really hard.  I am seeing a BIG improvement in my shoulders and biceps, which is keeping me motivated to continue to do the work to achieve even better results.  On the other hand, my triceps are really frustrating me!  As my daughter says, “You have Grandma’s arms,” as you can bet, that isn’t a good thing.  I have not been able to button the sleeves on the cute little cap sleeved shirts for years.  I either don’t buy that style of shirt or if I do buy it, I leave it unbuttoned.  I am convinced that someday the back of my arms will begin to respond and they will slim down.  I’m not giving up!  More Chair Dips here I come!!

The P90X Ab Ripper X is such a killer workout!  The goal with Ab Ripper X is to complete 25 reps of 11 different exercises.  We’re not talking about your standard crunches here either.  This entire workout engages your core muscles in a slightly different way than most people are used to.  I find myself grunting and puffing to complete each exercise and there are some I cannot fully complete yet, like the Fifer Scissor.  For that exercise you extend one leg skyward, while lifting the other leg off the floor only a few inches.  You hold this move for three seconds (until Tony counts) and then your switch legs – never letting either leg touch the floor.  You are engaging your entire abdominal region including your hip-flexors and lower back.  It is important to remind people to pull their abs in and blow air out while doing moves like this.  You’ve probably seen the people who allowed their stomach to push out during holding moves like the Fifer Scissor, which can create a ‘poochy’ or rounded abdominal region instead of the ideal flat tummy.   My stomach is almost flat now.  I am working on definition and losing the ‘muffin top’ I have sitting right above my hip bones.  That will come off with additional cardio work.

Throughout the years I have gone from SUPER fit to really out of shape, and I know my body and I know what it takes to get it where I want it to be.  That is why I am adding additional cardio workouts to my routine.  The P90X Fitness Guide has a version of this type of workout on page 26, called P90X Doubles.  It suggests waiting until you are finished with Phase 1 before adding the additional cardio.  With the help of my BodyBugg monitoring system and knowing my body well, I have started earlier.  My preferred form of cardio is kickboxing  and/or dance type workouts, so I have been doing Turbo Jam and Turbo Kick workouts at home.  I love it so much that I have decided to become a certified Turbo Kick instructor.  I completed my training and practical and written exam yesterday.  I will be practicing at home and with friends who are going to help me get better at cueing and leading the class.  I’ll be looking for a location to teach sometime in August.  I am really excited and a little nervous as I’ve never taught group exercise before.  Turbo Kick is so much fun though - I can’t wait to share it with others in my area!  I’ll keep you posted on how that goes for me.

In addition to the P90X Results & Recovery Formula (my 2nd favorite product next to Chocolate Shakeology!), I recently started adding a P90X Peak Performance Protein Bar as my mid-morning snack.  I have had the Cafe Mocha flavor and the Wildberry flavor.  These bars are dense, filling and easy to eat.  Have you ever had one of those other popular protein bars that you feel like you are going to rip a tooth out by trying to knaw off a bite?  Or how about the ones that are full of things like rice puffs – how satisfying is a bunch of puffed rice?  The Chocolate Peanut Butter P90X Peak Performance Protein Bar is 260 calories, 20 grams of protein and 31 grams of carbs.  After eating a bar – usually with my 2nd cup of coffee (something about chocolate and coffee just makes me happy), I feel satisfied and energized to kick it into gear for the rest of the day.

Next workout is P90X Yoga X (I skipped Legs & Back because I did an 8 hour Turbo Kick training instead – of which, about 3 hours or more was working out).  I am looking forward to the deep stretches and strength moves.

Day 9 – P90X Plyometrics

P90X Plyometrics – “Do your best – Forget the rest!”  You jump, you spin, you squat, you twist, you bounce, you REPEAT!  It is intense.  If you put your all into it, you will gasp for air, your muscles will burn and you will really appreciate the water breaks throughout the workout!

That is the gist of Plyometrics friends.  So, what does Plyometrics mean?  According to Wikipedia, Plyometrics is a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system, generally for the purpose of improving performance in a specific sport. Plyometric movements, in which a muscle is loaded and then contracted in rapid sequence, use the strength, elasticity and innervation of muscle and surrounding tissues to jump higher, run faster, throw farther, or hit harder, depending on the desired training goal. Plyometrics is used to increase the speed or force of muscular contractions, often with the goal of increasing the height of a jump. Plyometrics is hard. Okay, so I added that last sentence.

I happen to enjoy the Plyometrics workout.  I wasn’t much of an athlete growing up, except for some volleyball, and my USAF military experience was a long time ago, so these types of exercises make me feel like I could go out on a basketball or volleyball court and not completely embarrass myself.  At 42, I feel like I am in better shape than I was 20 years ago! It’s not just the Beachbody fitness programs that I’ve done (Turbo Jam and ChaLEAN Extreme) that make me feel this way.  It is the consistent use of the nutritional supplements and support products like ActiVit® Metabolism Formula, Core Cal-Mag™, Core Omega-3™, Shakeology®, and P90X Results and Recovery Formula that fuel my body as well as a diet relatively free of junk food, sugary sodas, fat and alcohol.  I’ll be honest, I still have a thing for Diet Coke, Margarita’s and coffee.  While I’m on P90X I have vowed to not drink any alcohol (except when we go to Cancun later this month) and I have reduced both my diet soda and coffee consumption to almost nothing.  That is saying a lot coming from a person who was in the coffee industry for 16 years!  I have been drinking more green tea and a lot of water instead.

I know that committing to a 90 day fitness program is a little scary.  Doing anything consistently for 90 days is a little intimidating for anyone, including me, but I feel that 90 days is nothing when I look at the big picture of my life.  Ninety days is a drop in the bucket and will be here and gone before I realize it.  Now, if I get up everyday and moan and groan about HAVING to do the fitness program – it’s going to be a loooong 90 days.  I have a choice every morning about how I’m going to take on my day.  I chose to be positive and proud for doing something for myself – for my health – to improve the quality of my life today and in the future.  If I don’t do it now, it will only be harder later.  If not now, when?  For most people it is later or never.  I hope you chose NOW over later or never.  You can do anything you set your mind to.  There is a Beachbody fitness program for all levels and interests.  Checkout all the Beachbody products HERE.  With the Beachbody support systems that include diet and nutritional support, proven fitness programs, personal coaching and the amazing Team Beachbody website – you CAN succeed!  It’s starts with putting the DVD into the player and then PUSH PLAY!
